My approach

I am a qualified Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor.

I attained a counselling diploma at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling and have worked for several years within various agency settings and have now set up my own practice.

The humanistic way of working forms the foundation of my counselling approach, and is approach to therapy which is centred around free-will, self-discovery and reaching your full potential. Rather than concentrating on individual problems or symptoms, I focus on everything that makes you who you are and the way you relate to the world around you. I work in a way which is led by you, working on the issues you want to explore. Although I work in a non-directive way, I remain in dialogue with you, offering my thoughts and reflections as we go along.

An Integrative way of working holds in mind that there is not a one size fits all approach to counselling. I am trained in several different modalities, meaning I can draw upon these depending on your needs and wishes.

Counselling can be a creative process, and sometimes there are other ways of working which can be useful in your sessions other than just talking. Sometimes I might bring things into our work such as art materials, objects or picture cards. I might invite movement or guided visualisations, but only if it’s something you feel up for doing. I see this as a collaborative process, and I welcome you to suggest anything you think might be useful in our work together.

Neurodivergency

I work in a neuro-affirming way and have chosen to particularly focus on this area within my practice. Neuro-diverse affirming therapy supports and accepts differences, rather than trying to ‘fix you’, it aims to help you feel empowered by building on your strengths and skills. Counselling can be a place to celebrate your uniqueness in a way that perhaps it hasn't been elsewhere in your life which can promote self-esteem and acceptance. It can also provide somewhere to explore, discover and practice ways to manage challenges you may face in your day to day life.

The way I work is adapted to each client and is inspired and informed by:

Person Centred Theory

Existentialism

Counselling may not work for everyone in the conventional sense of two people sitting in a room talking. For some people, this may feel very intense and exposing, or perhaps you are not able to travel but still want face-to-face sessions. Therefore, I shape my practice around your needs, offering the chance to work in whatever way you feel is the most beneficial for you.
